SAFETY MOMENT – Protecting Your Skin

In the outdoors, especially here at the World Scout Jamboree, sun and biting insects are abundant. The best protection from sunburn or insect bites (such as mosquitoes, ticks, etc.), is to wear appropriate clothing:

If the weather is too hot for wearing long sleeve shirts and pants, consider applying sun screen with a Sun Protection Formula(SPF) of 30 or more. Also consider using an insect repellent. The best insect repellents have DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or para-menthane-diol. DEET concentrations are best between 20 to 25% according to the US Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Remember: Drink a lot of water. Follow the recommendations from manufacturers for applying sun screen and insect repellents. In many cases, you may have to reapply these items after swimming, bathing, or any activity where you perspire.
