The Strength of Czech Scouting

Just few months ago, Czech scouts celebrated the longest time in history since their NSO has been legal.
In the past, Czech scouting went through some rough times – 3 prohibitions.

The first one was in 1940. Back then, scouting was abolished by the Nazi government. Many of the Czech scouts were fighting against Nazis and over 700 of them lost their lives in the war. In 1945, right after the war ended, scouting was quickly re-established.

In 1948, the Communist party gained power. Scouting was once again abolished and in 1950, many of scouts went to prison. In 1968, the regime loosened up and scouts could be active once again.

The last prohibition was two years later, in 1970. The communist regime gained power once again and scouts could not exist. Scouting never really died. Many of the troops functioned illegally. Finally, in 1989 after the Velvet Revolution, scouts could celebrate re-establishment. Since then, scouting in Czech Republic thrives and is hugely successful.
