Tina Wehmeyer did not look very worried about rappelling down the steep cliff face at Boulder Cove. After all, it wasn’t her first rappel.

Wehmeyer had been climbing and rappelling at home in the state of Florida in the southeastern U.S. In fact, the first time she tried rappelling, she was not intimidated. “It looked safe so I did it,” she said. “I just wanted to have fun.”

On her first rappel on Saturday, the U.S. Venturer began her descent easily as if she was simply a few meters above the ground. On her second try, she picked up speed. “Repelling is the fun part,” she explained. “It’s fun picking up speed.”

Most at Boulder Cove seem to agree. On Saturday afternoon, 42 scouts were on the cliff face at one time said climbing instructor Bruce Trumm from the U.S.

Rosario Bernier from Chile admitted that she had a moment of unease at the beginning but still glided down over a reverse ledge. “I liked it,” she said.

William Gardiner from the U.K. got a fast start but caught himself, and with the experience of his previous rappels, managed to control his rate of descent. “It was fun. I had to stop myself. I am used to a slower wall,” he said.

The Boulder Cove climbing wall is across the bridge from Legacy Village near swimming and stand-up paddle board locations. You can also reach it by taking the downhill trail from the Jack’s Landing East shuttle stop.
